Have a spa day in Budapest

Posted by Richard Norris on

If there’s one European city that celebrates the bath as much as I do, its Budapest.

The city is filled with a variety of bathhouses that date back hundreds of years and there’s one to suit everyone’s style. Are you looking for something quiet and spa-like? Something authentic? Somewhere fun to bring your shrieking children?

Here are the CliffsNotes:

  • Szechenyi Baths are like a classier version of a waterpark. Popular for kids and families.
  • The Gellért Baths, designed in Art Nouveau style, are the most beautiful and the most expensive. Quiet and relaxing.
  • The Rudas Baths, dating back to the 16th century, are less expensive and still retain a Turkish feel. These are much smaller and quieter.
  • For a more authentic experience, the even more intimate Kiraly Baths are frequented more by locals and are inexpensive though lack in the pomp and decor of the fancier facilities.

Before you go, be sure to look up the schedule so you don’t end up disappointed as many of them have gender-specific days and times.

Best Advice I’ll Ever Give: One thing you must do (I’m serious, guys) is the cold water plunge. It's scary but so worth it. Like “drinking a Rockstar and 5 cups of coffee now let's run around the block, I am awesome forever” worth it. Pro tip: Don’t dip a toe. Don’t hesitate. DO IT ALREADY. Then come back here and thank me.

After your relaxing spa day, check out the ruin pubs and Districts VI and VII. The food is great and the architecture remarkable.

Portland Foodie Guide: Dinner, Drinks & Coffee

Posted by Richard Norris on

Portland is the absolute food Mecca of the Pacific Northwest.

If you're planning to visit soon, be prepared for a tasty adventure. I personally love a good trip to the Pacific Northwest and Portland is by far one of my favorite cities. We've brought in a local Portlander foodie to recommend their favorite spots arranged by time of day: starting in the morning and going into the night.

I linked a Google Maps list to this guide at the bottom of the post so you can save it for later, all in one place!

Get Caffeinated

Crema

A reliable cup of coffee with a large selection of house-baked goodies and some of the friendliest baristas in town.

Floyd’s

(Source: Google & Floyd’s Coffee Shop)

Two locations featuring one huge plus: a free refill – which is quickly becoming unheard of these days. The delicious and cheap breakfast burrito with soy chorizo for about $3 is a must and the downtown location also carries a solid daily soup.

Drinks & Apps

Beulahland

Just your neighborhood bar plus wifi and pie. A great place to grab a day drink with your laptop until you’ve had one too many and end up creating gifs of your cat

The Bye and Bye (Vegan & Vegetarian Friendly)

(Source: Bye and Bye Instagram)

If you’re like me and dig a big bowl of perfectly steamed broccoli while you gulp down an obscenely large boozy iced tea in a mason jar, you’ll like B&B or its little sister, The Sweet Hereafter (3326 SE Belmont).

Moloko

Tiny and glowing with neon fish tanks, Moloko pours a sold drink and has a multi-page cocktail menu if you want to get fancy about it. Moloko is hard to find in person, so here’s what to look for.

Dinner

La Buca

This place has intentionally kept their prices low and the quality high making it one my favorite restaurants in Portland. I’m not sure what the secret ingredient in their tomato sauce is (unicorn blood??) but its pure magic.

See also: Le Pigeon (SE), Urban Farmer (SW), Subrosa (SE)

Dove Vivi

Specializes in cornmeal crust pizzas with fresh ingredients in balanced combinations. If you had offered me a slice of vegan pizza before Dove Vivi, I would have laughed. However, the Della Salute with grilled eggplant and tofu ricotta changed all that.

Portland Foodie Guide, Google Maps list here. Enjoy!

My dad and I make a Los Angeles lunch guide

Posted by Richard Norris on

Ever since my dad found love and moved to Los Angeles, I've found every excuse to visit him (I'm a little jealous that he lives there.) Los Angeles is known for having unique restaurants, so I always make it a point that my dad and I try a few while I'm there.

Here are my dad and my three favorite places:

Kye's Montana (Santa Monica/Pacific Palisades)

You completely forget that you're eating healthy food when you're having a Kyerito. To me, that's mission accomplished. The Kyeritos are packed with nutrients and flavor so you'll leave lunch feeling satisfied, with absolutely no guilt (and a couple of good IG stories!)

Beverly Hills/West Hollywood

Gratitude Kitchen & Bar

My dad has been getting more into vegetarian and vegan type foods recently. He grew up on a farm, so there was always meat on the table. For him, this is a totally new experience and he's absolutely loving. This is our favorite vegan place so far, because not only does it have a good atmosphere, but its healthy and you don't even notice it!

Downtown Los Angeles

Bottega Louie

This restaurant and bakery are loaded with atmosphere. The moment my dad and I walked in here, we completely forgot that we were in Downtown Los Angeles. BL transports you into a posh bakery somewhere in Europe. It's the vacation you never expected to be getting before you came here.

We hope you liked this guide!

Opinion: upscale hostels are not for me

Posted by Richard Norris on

The thought of sleeping in an unventilated room next to 16 smelly-footed strangers can be slightly offputting for some people - but when you're trying to stay in Paris for $20/night, it's the trade-off you make. I get it.

What I don't get is the concept of a "premium" hostel. Yes, it looks pretty and yes it's Instagram worthy. However, you pay two to three times the price to stay in a room that still:

a.) smells like that one traveler who hasn't showered in days and,
b.) has that random person snoring at volume 50
c.) charges you like $8 to use a towel for the night.
We deserve to treat ourselves better.
The world tells us millennials that we value experiences: but what about the experience of comfort? Of not worrying about missing that 7:00am flight to Copenhagen because the dude above you decided to bring a girl (or guy) over at 3am? (STILL SALTY)
Having to book a same-day flight could blow a huge chunk of your travel budget, even in Europe. And that is why I always budget extra for private accom. I'm not talking about staying in luxury: just a normal hotel or a regular Airbnb to me is already worth my guaranteed sanity.
Wouldn't you rather it actually feel like a vacation when you travel?
I love going out for drinks and having a good time when I travel. There's also no better feeling than knowing I can sleep through my hangover the next day without being interrupted by the frantic packing of the girl above me who's about to miss her 7:00am flight to Amsterdam.
Peace of mind. (And World Peace please?)
I'd rather buy the insurance, the comfort, and the well-rested face for a day of touristy Instagram pics, or know that I'm spending the absolute minimum to stay in accommodation abroad. Anything in between just doesn't seem worth it to me.
Do you agree? Disagree? Why/Why not?
